Belk, Inc. Reports Continued Growth in Comparable Store Sales and Net Income

Comparable store sales increase 5.8 percent in third quarter, 6.1 percent year-to-date

Net income rises to $11.1 million in third quarter, $78.8 million year-to-date

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 20, 2012 – Belk, Inc. today announced operating results for its fiscal third quarter ended Oct. 27, 2012.

Tim Belk, chairman and chief executive officer of Belk, Inc., said, "Our Belk team delivered another quarter of solid growth in comparable store sales and profits. A key factor in our sales growth is the significant investment we’re making across many areas of our business, including technology, store expansions and remodels, eCommerce, and service excellence."

Net Sales

Net sales for the 13-week period increased 5.9 percent to $837.5 million compared to the prior-year period. On a comparable store basis, sales increased 5.8 percent. The increase reflects a continuation of positive sales trends and execution of the company’s key strategies. Merchandise categories achieving the highest growth rate for the quarter were men’s, kids and home. eCommerce grew by 70.8 percent.

Year-to-date sales totaled $2.62 billion, an increase of 5.8 percent compared to the same 39-week period last year. On a comparable store sales basis, year-to-date sales increased 6.1 percent.

Net Income

Net income increased to $11.1 million for the 13-week period compared to $0.6 million in the same prior-year period. Net income excluding non-comparable items increased to $9.8 million compared to $1.4 million in the prior-year period. A detailed reconciliation of net income to net income excluding non-comparable items is provided at the end of this release.

Net income for the year-to-date increased 37.0 percent to $78.8 million compared to the same 39-week prior year period. Net income excluding non-comparable items increased 34.8 percent to $76.7 million.

Store Expansions and Remodels

The company has completed 19 store expansions and remodels and 10 shoe and accessories department remodels year-to-date, with investments totaling approximately $78 million. An existing store in Waynesville, N.C. was relocated to an expanded new store at Waynesville Commons shopping center, and the company’s two stores in Pensacola, Fla. were combined into a completely renovated store at Cordova Mall.

Stores completing expansions and major remodels included Decatur, Ala., Centerville, Ga., North Augusta, S.C., and Christiansburg, Va. Other major store remodels were completed in Pineville, N.C., and Kennesaw, Ga., along with standard remodels in Gainesville and LaGrange, Ga.; Corbin and Elizabethtown, Ky.; Forest City, Hendersonville and Jacksonville, N.C.; Greenwood, S.C.; and Chattanooga, Clarksville and Cleveland, Tenn. Additionally, shoe and accessories department expansions and remodels were completed in Spanish Fort, Ala.; Lady Lake, Fla.; Douglas and Fayetteville, Ga.; Concord and Goldsboro, N.C.; Aiken, S.C.; Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; Lufkin, Texas; and Winchester, Va.

Belk Contributes to Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief

On Nov. 5, Belk, Inc. announced a $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy in the company’s affected market areas and in New York. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who suffered and continue to struggle as a result of this devastating storm,” said Tim Belk. “Through this outreach, we hope to help care for our associates, customers, vendors and neighbors. The American Red Cross is at the forefront of disaster relief efforts, providing much needed resources and support to those whose lives have been impacted by this storm.”
